Artists Brief for Percent for Art Competition for Lucan East Educate Together National School

Brief

Lucan East Educate Together National School (LEETNS) wishes to commission a permanent artwork that reflects in part or total the ethos of our school. The commissioners wish to provide as broad a scope as possible to artists, in terms of artistic approach, proposed sites for the artwork (e.g. internal, external, or incorporated into some aspect of the building) and how the project might be executed. In keeping with our ‘child-centred’ ethos however, we require a certain level of artistic engagement with the children in respect of the project. As an Educate Together school, our ethos is central to our modus operandi and we would like to see this in some way reflected in the selected artwork (see context below).  The estimated budget for this project is €23,000.

Background

Lucan East Educate Together National School (LEETNS) is based in the Lucan area of west county Dublin in a new purpose built building built in 2008. Lucan East ETNS is a state funded national school that operates under the patronage of Educate Together. For more information check the website: www.educatetogether.ie, www.lucaneastet.com,

Context

LEETNS is one of 56 ‘Educate Together’ schools that are now situated around the country. These schools began to emerge in the early 1980’s as part of a movement to establish multi-denominational primary schools in Ireland. The distinctive ethos or governing spirit of these schools is reflected in four core principles – Child centred, co-educational, multi-denominational and democratically run. Whilst the concepts of child-centeredness and co-educational are now widely accepted in Irish primary education, what distinguishes the Educate Together schools is their hard work in developing a culturally inclusive and democratic ethos. The schools have developed education programmes which open the eyes of children to the naturally positive contribution that social, religious and cultural diversity and difference of viewpoint and opinion make to society. The other characteristic feature of these schools is that they are democratically organised and governed. This maximises the potential for building a genuine partnership between the professional, objective role of the teacher and the necessarily personal involvement of the parent in contributing to their children’s education.
