School Policies

Every school needs to have good policies in place. The details of these policies are drawn up by the Board of Management. On this page you find a brief overview of what they will be.

No Smoking

There is a full no smoking policy, which includes all school grounds. Parents/guardians are asked to refrain from smoking anywhere in or near the school.

Green School Policy

We want our children to learn to care for the environment and their planet. This is one of the cross-curricular strands in the Learn Together Programme. The best way to help the children learn is to lead by example, both at home and at school.

As parents you can help us by:

- providing a working email address (for an electronic Newsletter)

- giving us single sided misprints from the office (suitable for drawing and colouring)
- giving your child a lunch with the minimum of packaging and waste.

The staff will endeavour to recycle and re-use as much as they can.

School products will come from sustainable resources where viable. We also ask that the children bring home all waste from their lunches.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

The school endeavours to provide a safe and healthy environment for the children to learn in. This includes:

· removal of any safety hazards

· maintaining high levels of hygiene

· having policies in place for emergencies, accidents, healthy eating, walk to school, etc)

For the parents this means that their children:

· must know to wash and dry their hands after going to the toilet

· will get a health lunch/snack

· are kept at home when they are ill

· will walk to and from school where possible.

EMERGENCIES

All staff will be trained in the emergency procedures and will be familiar with the presence of all fire extinguishers, emergency exits and assembly points.

The children will be given regular fire drills and will be taught what to do in case of an emergency.

Emergency contact numbers will be available in each classroom and the office.

ACCIDENTS

There are first aid bags in each class room and in the office. There will be a list in the office of all staff who are trained in 1st aid.  Training will be kept up-to-date. Sufficient staff with 1st aid training must be on the premises each school day.

Parents will immediately be informed of any accidents that require medical attention. For “ordinary” scrapes and bruises, parents will be informed when the child is picked up from school.

An accident log will be kept in the office.

Text Box: HEALTHY EATING
The school promotes healthy eating habits, and as such asks the parents to give some thought to the contents of the lunchbox.
Please do not give the child sweets, chocolate or crisps. A sandwich or crackers are healthier options. No fizzy drinks are allowed, water is usually the best drink.
Text Box: WALK TO SCHOOL
The best way to handle the transition between home and school is to walk your child to school. The exercise and fresh air are healthy and the routine of walking to school gives the child time to mentally prepare for the school day. If you are not able to walk due to time constraints, perhaps you can talk to other parents from the same estate and organise a joint walk.

MOBILE PHONES

The children are not allowed to make or take calls, or text during school hours, including break time. If there is a need to contact the child, or for the child to contact the parents, please do so through the secretary, Lesley.

For exceptions, please talk to the principal.

BIRTHDAYS

Birthdays are important occasions and deserve to be marked. Your children will also be attending or hosting birthday parties. But not all parties have room for everyone in the class, so please be so kind as to give any invitations either to the parents or to children after school, and not in the classroom. We also ask that you do not bring in birthday cakes on children’s birthday as it can be messy cutting up the cakes and it puts pressure on all parents to do likewise.

ABSENTEEISM

Each teacher takes a roll call in their classroom at 9.00am. If you child is not in class at that time, it will be recorded as absent. If you expect to be late, please inform the secretary as soon as possible, so she can inform the teacher.

If your child is ill it would be appreciated if you can inform the school. You will be required to complete a form to explain the absence. This has to be given to the teachers for his/her records.

NOTE: If your child is absent from school for more than 20 days in the school year, the school has to notify the Department of Education through the National Education and Welfare Board.

Text Box: TRAFFIC & PARKING
The school will put measures in place to ensure safe conditions for the children to walk/cycle to and from school. Parking space is limited – leave your car at home if you can. Please adhere to any signs or any signalling by people in yellow safety vests – they are there to help protect all our children! From September it will no longer be possible for parents to park in the staff spaces due to the amount of traffic that we will have each morning.

RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION

Educate Together schools are multidenominational and teach all belief systems. There is no religious instruction in our curriculum. If you want your child to receive religious instruction, please contact your local church, mosque, temple or place off worship. The school is happy to provide a classroom for any such classes at a very modest rate. Please contact Eddie or Lesley about the availability of classrooms.
